R360 members know that leadership is predicated on character: our core values of honor, entrepreneurial grit, excellence, curiosity, and joy. Leadership creates the “springboard” for accomplishment in every aspect of life. And for members intent on developing their potential both as individuals and as a family unit, the good news is that leadership can be taught.
In October 2021, R360 members and their older children and grandchildren (ages 16+) are invited to participate in our Thayer Generational Leadership Development Journey.
"Intellectual Capital consists of knowledge (e.g., artistic, cultural, professional, political) as well as a family’s means of acquiring it, such as their cognitive habits and learning style."
"Social Capital describes a family’s role within its local community, broader society, and the world. It also includes the nature and strength of that family’s relationships with one another."
"Human Capital refers to the overall strength and wellbeing of one’s family: its members’ leadership potential; opportunities; and awareness of and commitment to personal purpose."
"Emotional Capital measures a family’s collective capacity to moderate emotion, embrace challenge and risk, resolve conflict constructively, assume responsibility for actions, and approach each day as a welcome adventure."
Thayer Leadership starts building leaders with a simple premise: character is foundational to your ability to lead. Combine this with knowledge and action, and you unleash the “whole” leader every organization needs. This approach has been proven by over two hundred years of application in the United States Army – and the reason the program is housed at The Historic Thayer Hotel on the grounds of West Point. At Thayer, participants experience the legacy of military leadership learnings from those who have powered and led a nation. And today, those leaders empower organizations to adapt and thrive.
During the Thayer Generational Leadership Development Journey, participants will be immersed in a “leadership lab” where they will examine best practices in the art and science of leadership. Additionally, participants will bond over training designed to develop camaraderie along with the body, mind, and spirit: modified military physical training (P.T.), pistol instruction, an obstacle course, and even attendance at an Army Black Knights football game. We’ll have a dedicated tailgate area and reserved seats so that we can experience the game with all its tradition, pageantry, and excitement.
Developed in concert with R360 Managing Partner Chris Ryan, a graduate of the Thayer Leadership Development program, the objectives of our Generational Leadership Development Journey include:
Bridge understanding and communication gaps in trust, respect, and generational differences
Break down barriers and open channels for learning, understanding, and continued growth
Provide access to different avenues of continued education and self-improvement
Explore a multitude of perspectives and techniques
You can watch a video about the Thayer Leadership Development program here.
In preparation for the in-person program, participants will engage in online asynchronous and virtual live work.
During this phase, participants will reflect on their values and start drafting a leadership philosophy. They will also get to meet their cohort and begin interacting with their teammates virtually.
With their leadership philosophy in hand and a better understanding of the expectations for the upcoming in-person program, participants will be prepared to maximize their time at West Point.
Thayer utilizes a diverse range of programs to build leaders of character by offering leadership and ethics education grounded in the US Army leadership philosophy of “Be, Know, Do” and the West Point values of “Duty, Honor, Country” in the inspirational venue of the Historic Thayer Hotel at West Point.
Participants will be immersed in a “leadership lab” exploring and contemplating over 200 years of best practices in the art and science of leadership—defined by the U.S. Army as “the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation, while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization.”
This phase is focused on Parent / Rising Leader combinations. Therefore, its objectives are to bridge understanding and gaps in communication, trust, respect, and generational differences that come with these relationships.
Success looks like a barrier broken down and newly open channels for learning, understanding, and continued growth in the relationships.
Following the program, participants will have an action plan to reference in the online platform and review with the senior advisor during a virtual call.
Whereas the onsite program is an intense three days of listening, learning, and experiencing leadership situations, the post-program reinforces the leadership lessons and helps participants put them into practice.
Additionally, the post-program provides accountability for the action plans that participants have developed for themselves.
R360 is pleased to offer the opportunity to learn leadership from those who’ve lived it. Due to the immersive nature of the program, The Thayer Generational Leadership Journey is limited to 15 Adult / Rising Leader pairs.
